In October 2015 we conducted an audit in Palau, an archipelago in the western Pacific Ocean in conjunction with The Nature Conservancy (TNC). The supply chain, engages in long-line fishing primarily of Yellowfin and Bigeye tuna, as well as other tuna-like species for the mainly for the Japanese and US markets, with other international and domestic trading also.

The focus of the audit was to evaluate the robustness of the traceability system and IUU risk of the fishery through on-site observations, staff interviews, document reviews, and traceability exercises. The Company’s performance was reviewed against international best practice standards for traceability and IUU risk, for example those developed by the WWF and Environmental Justice Foundation.

The results of the audit were used to identify potential improvements to the traceability from landing, through handling to export and to meet best practices around IUU mitigation as defined by international NGOs.
